Visit www.arcadiapublishing.com. <br>"<br><br>Title: History of Nunda, Portage, Genesee Falls told in new book <br>Author: Jeff Miller <br>Publisher: Dansville Online <br>Date: 6/23/2011 <p> <p>Nunda <br>The tale of Nunda, Portage, Genesee Falls and their connections to each other and to Letchworth State Park are told in a new book authored by Nunda Historical Society president Tom Cook. <p><br>The book is part of the widely-successful Images of America series distributed by Arcadia Publishing. <p><br> It s the story of three towns, each interlock together, but each with its own personality and characteristics and stories to tell, Cook said. <p><br>The book uses a variety of pictures of people, places and events that span a time period from about 1800 to the town s bicentennial in 2008. <p><br>The book is primarily about the story of a people and the way they adapted to changing times and world events, Cook explained. <p><br>With the exception of Nunda being just a few pages longer, Cook tried to represent each town equally. <p><br>The new book, released June 13, took a year for him to complete. <p><br>Cook was approached by Arcadia roughly a year and a half ago after the success of the 2008 Images of America book on Letchworth State Park, which he co-authored with three others. <p><br>When he suggested an historical book on Nunda, the company decided there wasn t enough marketability for a book just on Nunda, they asked him to expand. <p><br>Cook combined the three towns with Letchworth, and then Arcadia gave him the go ahead. <p><br> Each one of those towns deserve their own book, and there s a wealth of material for each town, he said. But adding them together, was a natural fit. <p><br>He said although this book includes Letchworth, the material does not overlap with the 2008 Letchworth book, except for a photo of the Civilian Conservation Corps camp. The famous Letchworth bridge is also included in both, but is told from a different perspective. <p><br>When put together, Cook said the two books compliment each other. <p><br>Cook began compiling resources from the historical society, and added material from town historians offices; then went on to gather more photos from private collections. <p><br>Cook explained that combining all of this material posed a challenge for him in that Arcadia restricted him to 225 photos with a 70-word caption limit, and all had to be encompassed in 128 pages. <p><br>That s a standard restriction for each of the 10,000 books in the Images of America series, he said. <p><br>Books are available at the Nunda Historical Society, The Nunda Pharmacy and Bell Memorial Library, The Book Den in Dansville, and online at www.arcadiapublishing.com. <p><br>Cook will be giving a presentation on the book tonight, June 23, in the Ossian Town Hall with a book signing to follow. Appell <BR>Publisher: The Daily News <BR>Date: 6/18/2011 <P><BR>Historian Tom Cook, co-author of a 2008 book about Letchworth State Park, has produced a new book for Arcadia Publishing's "Images of America" series "Nunda, Portage and Genesee Falls." <BR>Cook, a retired Keshequa teacher, said Arcadia considered Nunda by itself a subject "too small" for one of their books, which typically run 125 pages with 250 photos. The addition of Portage and then Genesee Falls, with its Letchworth Park connection, supplied the quantity of historical material deemed adequate. <BR>Cook's knowledge of his subject are evident in the selection of photographs, the balance of the subject matter, and concise captions which supply a wealth of historic data. <BR>People, churches, schools, industries, businesses, homes and events are portrayed in chronologies which are thorough historical summaries of the three townships. <BR>Among the photographs are an aerial view of the large bluestone quarry south of Portageville, the last railroad freight car to enter Nunda, the railroad trestle which spanned Keshequa Creek on the line to Swain, circa 1900, with a baseball game underway in the foreground at the future Kiwanis Park, and abutments and debris left in the wake of the May 6, 1875 Portage trestle fire. <BR>Cook had to go far afield, to archives in Colorado, to obtain photographs of renown Hunt native Capt. Edward Bissel Hunt and his wife, Helen Fiske Hunt. Edward was a West Point graduate and the United State's first submarine causality in the Civil War. <BR>Remarried and relocated in the west, Helen Hunt Jackson became a noted writer and advocate for better treatment of Native Americans. <BR>As a historian, Cook feels each of the towns would have been deserving of its own book. Nevertheless, as a consolidated subject, he has found "they fit together well." <BR>Photographs came from town historians and various local families. <BR>"The stories unfolded as I found the photos, but as the stories unfolded, I started to search for certain kinds of photos," Cook says. <BR>Unintentionally perhaps, the photographs document the great changes wrought on the rural townships by the automobile. <BR>"I'm encouraged that the history will be important to the people in generations to come," Cook reflects. <BR>Cook says that the book is by no means a complete history: "It supplies some glimpses.
