Named for the Native American village that once stood within its borders, Nunda swelled with settlers seeking to build a better life for their families. The vast township was soon carved into several smaller towns, including Portage and Genesee Falls. Nunda, Portage, and Genesee Falls explores the history of these three towns through historical images and resources from the collections of the author, the Nunda Historical Society, town historians, and area residents. Vintage photographs also tell the stories of the Genesee Valley Canal, the great Portage Bridge, and Letchworth State Park.

Review Quotes

Title: History of New York Towns Told Through Photographs
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
Date: 6/13/2011

The newest addition to Arcadia Publishing s popular Images of America series is Nunda, Portage, and Genesee Falls from local author Thomas S. But adding them together, was a natural fit.

He said although this book includes Letchworth, the material does not overlap with the 2008 Letchworth book, except for a photo of the Civilian Conservation Corps camp. The famous Letchworth bridge is also included in both, but is told from a different perspective.

When put together, Cook said the two books compliment each other.

Cook began compiling resources from the historical society, and added material from town historians offices; then went on to gather more photos from private collections.

Cook explained that combining all of this material posed a challenge for him in that Arcadia restricted him to 225 photos with a 70-word caption limit, and all had to be encompassed in 128 pages.

That s a standard restriction for each of the 10,000 books in the Images of America series, he said.

Books are available at the Nunda Historical Society, The Nunda Pharmacy and Bell Memorial Library, The Book Den in Dansville, and online at www.arcadiapublishing.com.

Cook will be giving a presentation on the book tonight, June 23, in the Ossian Town Hall with a book signing to follow. Program starts at 7 p.m.

Other book signings are scheduled for June 25 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Bottle Tree Farm Bed and Breakfast in Portage and at 7 p.m. June 28 in the Bell Memorial Library.

Copyright 2011 Dansville-Genesee Country Express. Appell
Publisher: The Daily News
Date: 6/18/2011

Historian Tom Cook, co-author of a 2008 book about Letchworth State Park, has produced a new book for Arcadia Publishing's "Images of America" series "Nunda, Portage and Genesee Falls."
Cook, a retired Keshequa teacher, said Arcadia considered Nunda by itself a subject "too small" for one of their books, which typically run 125 pages with 250 photos. The addition of Portage and then Genesee Falls, with its Letchworth Park connection, supplied the quantity of historical material deemed adequate.
Cook's knowledge of his subject are evident in the selection of photographs, the balance of the subject matter, and concise captions which supply a wealth of historic data.
People, churches, schools, industries, businesses, homes and events are portrayed in chronologies which are thorough historical summaries of the three townships.
Among the photographs are an aerial view of the large bluestone quarry south of Portageville, the last railroad freight car to enter Nunda, the railroad trestle which spanned Keshequa Creek on the line to Swain, circa 1900, with a baseball game underway in the foreground at the future Kiwanis Park, and abutments and debris left in the wake of the May 6, 1875 Portage trestle fire.
Cook had to go far afield, to archives in Colorado, to obtain photographs of renown Hunt native Capt. Edward Bissel Hunt and his wife, Helen Fiske Hunt. Edward was a West Point graduate and the United State's first submarine causality in the Civil War.
Remarried and relocated in the west, Helen Hunt Jackson became a noted writer and advocate for better treatment of Native Americans.
As a historian, Cook feels each of the towns would have been deserving of its own book. Nevertheless, as a consolidated subject, he has found "they fit together well."
Photographs came from town historians and various local families.
"The stories unfolded as I found the photos, but as the stories unfolded, I started to search for certain kinds of photos," Cook says.
Unintentionally perhaps, the photographs document the great changes wrought on the rural townships by the automobile.
"I'm encouraged that the history will be important to the people in generations to come," Cook reflects.
Cook says that the book is by no means a complete history: "It supplies some glimpses. Hopefully people will turn to other sources and explore more on their own."
Five book signings are scheduled in coming weeks:
TODAY: Nunda Historical Society, 24 Portage St., Nunda. From 3 to 5 p.m.
THURSDAY: Ossian Historical Society, 4706 Ossian Hill Rd., Dansville.
