The author originally thought about writing this true story for children to share in the fun and happiness of his family's adventures with Joey, their adopted baby chimpanzee. During the writing of the book, the years of happiness were tainted by a sense of guilt regarding the reality of Joey being taken away from his natural place of being. Going Bananas uses colorful illustrations and masterful storytelling to share the harm of captivity and advocate for animals so they can be truly happy in the wild.

Book Synopsis

This is an unforgettable book that helps children, and their parents understand the harm in removing any wild animal from their natural habitat.
Although there is no way to go back in time and change Joey's life, the author wrote this book to share this important message with others that wild animals should never be captured or kept in a pen. This is a powerful animal advocacy book that was written for children but shares a fundamental lesson for everyone. Animals must live naturally in the wild and human beings share the collective responsibility to give animals the freedom they deserve.

About the Author

Marvin Ginsburg majored in zoology at the University of R.I. and graduated from N.Y. Medical College. He completed residency in internal medicine at Sinai Hospital Baltimore Md. as well as at UCLA Los Angeles, along with a fellowship in pulmonary medicine. He entered the private practice of medicine in 1968 and 3 years ago became involved in an administration position that he is still serving. Marvin is a co-author of two medical publications and recently published the medical thriller, Send in the Clones.
Marvin, his wife, and all his children are lovers of animals and over the years they had the luxury to have many different animals on ranches in California and Oregon. Three years ago, an animal trainer offered to sell Marvin a baby chimpanzee who is the star of Going Bananas. Joey lived with Marvin and his family for three years. They were amazed at the intelligence, behavior and understanding he showed them during this time. They took him everywhere portrayed in the book. Marvin wrote this book to provide children education about wildlife conservatism, protection, atrocities, and solutions that can only become a reality when the world is knowledgeable and advocates for animal rights.
