His scholarly interests centre on ancient Greek literature and myth. Among his many books are <i>Imaginary Greece</i> (Cambridge University Press; translated into 5 languages), <i>The Complete World of Greek Mythology</i> (Thames and Hudson; translated into 10 languages), <i>Forms of Astonishment</i> and <i>Myths and Tragedies in their Ancient Greek Contexts</i> (both Oxford University Press). From 2006-2012 he was President of the Foundation for the <i>Lexicon Iconographicum Mythologiae Classicae</i>. He is fascinated by mythology, and takes every opportunity to convince others of the vital importance of stories and story-telling.
