Book Synopsis

Kunda is an eleven-year-old boy living in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, with his two sisters, Asya and Sekai, and their parents. Like many of the families living in the village, the family is poor; life is not easy. Then Kunda's mother and his older sister, Sekai, pass away from malaria. Their aunt Muzambe comes to stay and take care of them for a time, and both Kunda and Asya are happy. But when she returns to her home, things take a turn for the worse. Kunda's father is an aggressive man who is often drunk. Though the children are both afraid, Kunda tries hard to take care of his little sister. One night, when their father returns home drunk, he viciously beats the boy. The next chance they get, Kunda and Asya grab a few belongings and flee into the night. They decide to make their way to Zambia and find their uncle. But can they make it there safely? This novel tells the tale of a brother and sister who struggle to escape their abusive father and find a place where they can be happy.
