Book Synopsis

The conventional anticorrosive coatings which are based on heavy metals such as chromium, zinc, and copper are toxic to the environment. There has been a need to find suitable replacement coatings to be environmentally friendly and effective to inhibit corrosion of steels. Conductive polymers have acquired more attention in the last years due to their environmentally benign nature and high effectiveness to protect steels against corrosion. In this book, the conducting polymer is briefly introduced including the history, synthesis, and conducting mechanism. Then conducting polymer especially based on PPy coatings in corrosion protection is discussed, and several proposed protection mechanisms are introduced for understanding the protection of conducting polymer. Then, the works of the past ten years about conducting polymer of our group in the corrosion protection, such as, steel, copper, zinc, and other metal surfaces are reviewed and studied. Some recent works about the marine antifouling and marine heavy-protective coatings by conducting polymer and graphene/conducting polymer composites are also introduced in this book.

About the Author

Dr. Nan Sheng is employed as an Associate professor in China University of Mining and Technology, Xuzhou, China. During her doctoral and first postdoctoral associate research, she has been engaged in the application of conducting polymer in corrosion protection of Mg alloy and stainless steel. She also worked on the electrochemistry and mechanism of corrosion. During the second postdoctoral associate, she worked on energy storage materials, particularly on the corrosion protection of kinds of phase change metal material. Professor Toshiaki Ohtsuka is employed as an Emeritus professor in Hokkaido University. He received his Ph.D. in Applied Chemistry in 1976 from Hokkaido University, Sapporo/Japan. For his contributions to the corrosion and electrochemistry, he was awarded for several honors. For example, he received the Society Award from ECSJ (Electrochemical Society of Japan) in 2012, the Society Award from The Surface Finishing Society of Japan in 2014, and the Society Award from Japan Society of Corrosion Engineering in 2014. Dr. Yanhua Lei is an associate professor in Shanghai Maritime University, as well as Shanghai young Oriental scholar. In recent years, he has hosted and participated in more than 10 programs, such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Dr. Lei is the author or co-author of over 50 peer-reviewed publications and a large portfolio of patents.
