Book Synopsis

It is said that over 70% of special needs marriages fail. This is the story of one. Not Sleeping depicts a suburban New York couple, Josh and Claudia Sherman, separated though not yet divorced. As they struggle to navigate their way through the painful process of uncoupling, they also must continue to co-manage the difficult demands of their nine-year old autistic daughter. It was Josh who decided to leave the marriage. But, in an unanticipated turn of events, Claudia is the one who quickly finds a new relationship. As the story moves forward, Josh's Plan B, as he calls it, begins to take shape. It is centered around a possible new job and his own nascent romance. But Plan B also necessitates him to moving to California and leaving his familiar life, and specifically his children, behind. Josh is drawn toward this powerful chance at reinvention ? but with no guarantees and at what cost?

Review Quotes

"Josh and Claudia, parents of an autistic child, take different paths to reinvention in Alan Winnikoff's wonderful second novel. While their marriage is disintegrating, Claudia begins to build a new blended family in New York, and Josh, still a dreamer, chases a chimerical life in California. The novel is a page turner, but what remains with me are the deep and insightful portraits of two people, how they are formed by their struggles and challenges, and how they not only carry on but grow and even thrive. Read Not Sleeping, a novel both comic and heartbreaking that will live in your memory long after you close the book." Lawrence Coates, author of The Goodbye House "Great prose?like God?is in the details. Alan Winnikoff writes great prose. The shine off the wet streets of a city at night, the tangle of a woman's bangs, the anguish of a child? After having been seduced by this novel, you wonder: 'Did I read that, or did it happen to my brother. Or did it happen to me?'" ?Benjamin Cheever author of The Plagiarist, The Partisan, Famous After Death, and The Good Nanny, editor of The Letters of John Cheever

About the Author

Alan Winnikoff is the author of the 2017 novella The Weekend, which was praised by reviewers, who called it "smooth," "reflective" and "a stunning picture of doubt, realization, and the what-ifs of love."
