About the Book

"Sailaday OK" is a book for practitioners involved in Outdoor Education, Adventure and Eco-therapy, and anybody who loves Sailing. This supports professionals and others involved in addiction recovery.

Book Synopsis

Sailaday OK tells the story of how I built on my personal experiences of addictions and recovery to create a charity to provide a marine based adventure therapy programme to help recovering addicts to return and to find their place back in the world, to reunite with their family and friends and to become, once again, positive members of the community.

It is a remarkable and inspiring story as I suffered 25 years of multiple drug and alcohol abuse and drew on my experiences of recovery to create this unique and successful charity. I am continuing to embrace the resolution of all my addictions and how developing an understanding and deepening relationship with nature helped to resolve my difficulties.

My passion for sailing and understanding of recovery from addiction was the inspiration for creating Sailaday OK, in order to pass on knowledge, give healing, inspiration and hope to those struggling to recover. During the 15 years of the charity's active lifespan, I worked to develop a unique residential programme of interventions and exercises based on psychotherapy and adventure therapy, theory and practice.

This book includes case histories and stories of individuals' experiences on the boat, descriptions of the exercises and interventions developed over this time, and the theory behind the programme and exercises. I have come to understand addictive behaviour as symptomatic of the underlying issues of trauma and shame, and you will read how experiential sailing therapy brings about significant positive changes in the lives of those who at one time or another had lost all hope.

In 2016 I was honoured to be awarded the BEM, the British Empire Medal. The Award was 'for services to adventure therapy and addiction services in the south west UK.' This was the part of the Order of the British Empire awarded for either Meritorious Service or 'Gallantry'.

I believe my book to be a valuable piece of work for practitioners involved in Outdoor Education, Adventure and Eco-therapy, and anybody who understands sailing as more than just a hobby. This story is compelling evidence of how this form of therapy can help those professionals involved in addiction recovery. It is an inspiring story for those caught in the turmoil and struggle and users of addictions, proof that your dreams are perfectly achievable if you are prepared to change and set a course that is in harmony with the conditions around you.

Review Quotes

"This book is an inspiring story of the author's personal narrative of overcoming addiction and his professional journey of helping others heal. Through his own experiences with trauma and addiction recovery, the author embarks on a personal and professional journey that leads to the creation and implementation of a therapeutic sailing program that incorporates marine-based adventure therapy. The book provides the story of how this program developed and the impact it had on participants' self-concept, resilience, and self-esteem. In reading the story of the authors' personal evolution, and the concurrent evolution of this innovative adventure therapy program, one cannot help but be buoyed by a sense of optimism and hope that outdoor experiential therapy may offer respite from the often-intractable pain of addiction. Blending personal narratives, theory, and research, this book will be useful for both clients and practitioners looking for options beyond talk therapy and the medical model of addiction treatment."

Dr. Christine Lynn Norton, LCSW, CCAT, CCTP, CET

Professor, Texas State University School of Social Work

Research Scientist, Outdoor Behavioral Healthcare Center

"There is no Wi-Fi in the forest, but you find a better connection".

One thing that aids recovery from addiction is connection - with others and with nature.

This book by Richard Hall about what motivated him to start up the ground-breaking adventure therapy charity Sailaday OK and what was achieved, as a result, is informative, inspiring, poignant, and funny all at the same time.

Sailing is unpredictable. Sometimes the waters are calm, and at other times they are turbulent. Participants learn that if you get caught in a vortex you must stay perfectly still. For an addict, this is no easy task.

Countless people have found the experience of sailing with Richard life-changing. This book is a fitting tribute to what was achieved by assisting troubled people to find a deep connection with themselves and others through the power of nature.

Alison Cameron MA FRSA

Director

Alison Cameron Consulting, Health & Social Care

'four days with SOK achieved what four years psychiatrists, psychologist therapies failed to achieve'

AC 2016

Immediately I felt the familiarity of being around boats at a windy marina and, sensing an adventure was about to begin, I was eager to learn about the author's expertise with marine adventure therapy. Like many of the author's co-adventurers, I got more than I expected.

Going out to sea is always an adventure, it can be challenging even on a calm day, and there is no doubt that the sea offers nothing less than pure unforgiving wilderness. The author masterfully navigates between taking care of himself, the boat, and the others onboard: their journeys are wonderful metaphors and honest explorations of the essence of both adventure and Eco-Therapy. If you are curious about how connections with others, with oneself, and with nature can be healing then do read this. It is as honest and as raw as the sea itself. This is a powerful journey inwards as much as one out to sea where the smallest of things can make the biggest difference. This book should be essential reading for anyone using nature in their therapeutic practice.

Dr. Stephan Natynczuk; D.Phil., MSC, MBA, LPIOL, MNCS(accred).
