He's worried about a lot of things--how his dad treats Nance and his twin half-brothers; the hydro crop in his bedroom; his reckless friend, Merrick. Nate hangs out at the local youth centre and fills his notebooks with things he can't say. But when some of his pages are stolen, and his words are graffitied at the centre, Nate realises he has allies. He might be able to make a difference, change his life, and claim his future. Or can he? Raw and real, funny and heartbreaking, this is a story about what it takes to fight back when you're not a hero.

Review Quotes

"Wakefield's characterization combines a knack for subverting stereotypes with empathy and nuance...A little bit Holden Caulfield, a little bit Will Hunting, and a whole lot of heart."--Kirkus

"In this complex novel ... examinations of disadvantage and hopelessness lead to brilliant revelations."--Foreword Reviews

"Wakefield's writing is unflinchingly honest...readers who let themselves sink into Wakefield's descriptions of small-town life, its constraints, and frustrations will enjoy following Jack as she searches for meaning, finding love and purpose in the unlikeliest people."Publisher's Weekly on Friday Brown

'Fans of intelligent, unflinching, spine-crawling thrillers...will love Ballad for a Mad Girl.' Books+Publishing

"One of Australia's best YA writers."--Cath Crowley

"When I finish a Vikki Wakefield novel I get a tiny ache in my heart because I'm already missing her gutsy characters."--Melina Marchetta

"Davina Bell uses the increasingly familiar post-apocalyptic scenario to explore ideas about families, sisters, identity and love.
