She is also the author of the picture books <i>Alvin Ailey</i><i>Duke Ellington</i> (a Caldecott Honor Book, Coretta Scott King Honor Book) and <i>Ella Fitzgerald</i>, each illustrated by her husband and frequent collaborator, Brian Pinkney.
