About the Book

I am an elementary school librarian and my Second Grade classes are working on constructing playground equipment that is accessible to a wider range of students. Imagine my happy surprise to find this book.

Book Synopsis

One day, I came across a story on Facebook about a woman who met a father and daughter at the playground. Due to a disability, the girl was confined to a wheelchair and unable to enjoy any of the playground facilities. All she could do was... Put her doll in the swing and push it, which caused great sorrow for her and her father. This story gave me a lot of inspiration to write this book.

Review Quotes

A very important story about a socially caring and friendship"
I really liked the idea that the children have initiated to make their playground coordinated for special children. I think that every child should read this book. The lesson of the story makes our world a better place. Well done

What is your favorite thing to play with at the playground? Do you go to the playground very often?

The author, Yael Manor, is a favorite writer of mine and my granddaughter who is 6. We take turns reading to each other, and it is a special time for both of us. My granddaughter lives right down the street from her school's playground, and it is a large playground with many things to play on. She particularly likes the zip line and the climbing creature. While we were reading this book, we realized that there isn't much for a disabled child to play with. This book owned our eyes to the lack of playground facilities for children with disabilities. This made my granddaughter sad, but we thought about ways to open up the playground to everyone.

Parents/ teachers will enjoy reading this book to their children because it will open up a subject for discussion that many children have never had. How do we include every child in our daily activities. My granddaughter thought about some of the activities she could not partake because she did not think she had the ability until someone else included her. We do not want any child not to be able to play on the playground, and it is up to all of us to think about how we can help change occur.

The illustrations by Biljana Mihajlovic are bright, vivid and colorful. They depict the playground and how Daniel was able to find people to help make this playground accessible to Dana. The writing is superb, and it draws the children and adults into this important story. I am so pleased to say that my granddaughter and I are going to explore how her playground can become accessible to every child.
