It is about making choices for Adam that defied the advice of "professionals." It is about a boy with a tested IQ of 40 who, against all odds, learned to communicate, went to a regular school and on to college, bought his own house and lived an extraordinary life that was nothing special.

David and his wife, Jetta, had a deep desire that their only child, born with the neurological anomalies of Down Syndrome and Autism, be valued for the gifts he brought rather than be thrust into an institutional setting as the "helpful professionals" encouraged. They did not want anything special for Adam. They were both challenged and altered through Adam's early years and by kindergarten began searching for and trying different schools until they found one where Adam was included and welcomed as an honored member of the community. Throughout his young life, Adam made thousands of friends, learned from them, and taught them the true meaning of relationships. Many of their stories are included in this book.

I Choose Adam is about how raising Adam transformed his family, his church, his school and an entire community of friends. This story will make you laugh and cry, and in the end, you will be changed for having read it.

Review Quotes

Courage, stubbornness, insight, intelligence, creativity and out-of-the-box thinking are all words that describe David Winstrom, the author of I Choose Adam. Beyond these words and far more important is the word love. David chose to love Adam and be his advocate. This book is the amazing and emotional journey of David, Jetta, his wife, and Adam their very special son who was born with both Autism and Down syndrome. I was blessed to have Adam at Zeeland Christian School and learned a great deal about life from him. You, too, will be blessed and will gain a new perspective of many life lessons by taking the time to read this book. Nothing would honor Adam's life more than making sure that every single child is given the opportunity to reach their full potential.
Bill Van Dyk
Principal, 1987-2016
Zeeland Christian School

The name Adam is embedded in the Hebrew word "adama" which literally means earth or earthy. As the Torah states, Adam was made from the dust of the earth. Upon his birth Jetta and David named their beloved son Adam. And rightfully so. Adam, for those who knew him was one of the most earthy, down to earth, caring persons any of us could ever hope to meet. Adam was about the meaningful mission of bringing all of us over-achievers down to earth. In and through Adam we discovered our own frailty, weakness of moral character and for those who were open to Him our own humanity. Accepting Adam brought some closer to accepting God and his beloved - persons of inestimable worth in a kingdom of grace and beauty.
David tells his son's story with honesty, compassion and a determination to help the reader know that all life matters to God and therefore should matter to us. The story of Adam to various degrees is a part of our own story as we journey to know more fully the ultimate meaning of life on this sod. David has chosen to be vulnerable in this storytelling in order to open the door to our own recognition as vulnerable beings.
Andy DeJong
Adam's Pastor

This book describes the role of love, tenacity, courage, advocacy and often unpredictability in David and Jetta Winstrom's life journey with their son, Adam. It also describes how they turned the challenges they faced together into extraordinary developmental opportunities for Adam.
In this sometimes uncomfortable, always instructive and touching reading about Adam, David offers his very frank perspective on how people, institutions and the social environment influenced and were influenced by Adam. This book is important reading for parents, educators, religious leaders, helping professionals and policy makers. David insightfully shares the impact of his advocacy on individual and societal expectations, policies and decisions. The reported process and outcomes of this advocacy on Adam's opportunities and life development and the changed perceptions of those around him engage each reader emotionally and intellectually. Implicit in the book is the question that each of us must ask: Are our perceptions, expectations and actions constricting and inhibiting or expanding and encouraging greater growth and opportunities for those around us?
James C.
