Readers will treasure The Wedding: Jesus Stands for His Bride in the Book of Revelation for both its educational and devotional value.

The author upholds the traditional Adventist methodology of allowing Scripture to interpret itself, and looking to history to confirm fulfilled prophecy. With that said, he also introduces a number of fresh insights. He highlights fascinating linguistic and conceptual connections with other portions of Scripture that many of us have not identified before. Those who pore over this tome will find a number of areas they readily agree with, and other areas that will require prayer and reflection before forming a decision, but nearly all will acknowledge Burgess' skillful manner of provoking prayerful thought and contemplation.

What makes this book truly worthwhile is the presence of Christ. Burgess stresses the ubiquity of His manifestation throughout the book--as the One who stands seven times on behalf of His bride, empowering her to withstand the fiercest opposition for the sake of faithfulness to Him and His commandments. For those of us who are living in the judgment hour, Jesus offers us the enormous privilege of issuing the final wedding invitation to the world, sitting with Him upon His throne, and living with Him for eternity.

Review Quotes

THE WEDDING: Jesus Stands for His Bride in the Book of Revelation by Scott Burgess is deeply Christ-centered, like his other work, THE STAND, Jesus in the Book of Daniel. As an interpreter of Bible prophecy, this author is clearly a Historicist. He rejects Catholic Preterism and Futurism as well as Dispensationalism, its Protestant derivative. In this book, too, he draws on the most up-to-date and varied research as well as the time-tested work of Uriah Smith. He is well acquainted with Koinē Greek, the original language of the New Testament, as well as different manuscript traditions. Among other things, this helps him to vindicate the Vicarius Filii Dei interpretation of the number 666 in Revelation 13:17, 18. He also shows that the third-century Chester Beatty papyrus, which antedates all other manuscripts, makes it clear that the mark and the number of the Beast should not be confused with each other. While both refer to the papacy, they are distinctly different. The mark of the Beast is Sundaykeeping, which will yet be enforced by legislation. But the number is the notorious 666. It not only provides the correct gematria for Vicarius Filii Dei, but is vindicated by copious historical examples of how various Popes for centuries boosted their power and authority by using that title. While there may be some points of prophetic interpretation where I differ, I do indeed recommend THE WEDDING as a valuable resource. --Edwin de Kock, M.A., Dip. Theo.
