Book Synopsis

Five creative takes on the evocative and elegant spaces of Foundation Beyeler's Renzo Piano building

The work of contemporary artists Leonor Antunes, Silvia Bächli, Toba Khedoori, Susan Philipsz and Rachel Whiteread provides various approaches to the space of Renzo Piano's exemplary museum building for the Fondation Beyeler. These artists create a specific sense of space--acoustically, as sculpture, or in drawings. In their appearance and presence, the works seem restrained and unobtrusive, but their effect is nevertheless strong and powerful. These works of art evoke spaces that lie somewhere in between the recognizable and the ephemeral.
From Whiteread's architectural fragments and shells to Khedoori's drawings of architectural units and from Antunes' mysterious knotted sculptures to Bächli's careful, cool painted lines, create places and respites in which the faculty of memory is triggered, and images, as well as memories, come to life.
