This fascinating guide takes us from the Brill Building in New York City to Bakersfield's distinctive country sound; from California's sunny surf music to D.C.'s gogo scene; from the Southwest's technobanda to Louisiana zydeco. Musics that swept the entire continent (rock 'n' roll) rub up against sounds that are the product of a few fertile neighborhoods of a single city (Mardi Gras Indian Music). This is the one indispensible companion for any fan of popular music, written in such a way that one can read and enjoy the volume cover-to-cover or choose to use it as needed as a reference.
Gage Averill, Dean of Arts, The University of British Columbia, Canada

About the Author

John Shepherd is Chancellor's Professor of music and sociology, and Dean, Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research at Carleton University, ON.
