Refreshingly contemporary commentaries distilled from talks given by George Jeffery as an introduction to the fundamental ideas of the Gurdjieff teaching. Many regard it as the clearest introduction to what is referred to as the 'Work' or the 'Fourth Way'. A Bridge to Reality not only explains Gurdjieff's ideas, it also gives an idea of what it entails to be in a Gurdjieff group and what is required to follow the teaching.

At the end of each chapter questions and answers selected from various meetings cover common queries about the teaching and its practice. A central tenet of the teaching is highlighted - that it is for each person to confirm the fundamental truth of the teaching for themselves. It is certainly not presented as a 'doctrine' to be followed without question. Indeed it could be said that active questioning is central to the practice.

Covering all key topics, it serves both as introduction and an invaluable reference for the experienced. This is a book that the reader will turn to again and again should they choose to pursue the Fourth Way.

Subjects covered include:

Knowledge, Being and Understanding, the concept of Truth

Essence, Conditioning, Personality, False Personality

The Seven Centres: our different centres of intelligence

Multiplicity of I's

The Idea of Conscience and the Four Levels of Consciousness

The Laws of Three and Seven

The Ray of Creation

The Food Octaves within the human system

Cause and Effect

Detrimental Functions

The Four Bodies

Review Quotes

The book is a perceptive introduction to the Fourth Way. The author clearly elucidates key concepts of GI Gurdjieff's teachings to those seeking an explanation for the sorry state of the the human condition and a means to escape.

Each chapter concludes with a useful question and answer dialogue which address concerns and misconceptions that may arise in the teachings.

Anthony, Moreton

George Jeffery's introduction to Gurdjieff's teachings is both accessible and inspiring. Jeffery takes the various ideas that Gurdjieff brought and examines them one by one in 'bite size' pieces. There is also a question and answer section at the end of each chapter which give and insight into what is possible when one applies oneself to these teachings. Truly inspirational. Marianne, Stroud

"I was so delighted to find a book that laid out in layman's terms the most important elements of Gurdjieff's teachings. As someone just starting out in Gurdjieff Work, this book has been an invaluable introduction for me. I feel that the book isn't just describing the core of the teachings - its deceptively simple approach hides much wisdom in its pages, born out of, I would imagine, a wealth of work and experience. George Jeffery's approach is both warm and insightful - a great contribution to the Gurdjieff literature." Fiona, Manchester

An excellent introduction to the Gurdjieff teachings. Throughout the course of 13 chapters the author is able to explain the core ideas and concepts of Mr Gurdjieff in a manner that is clear and accessible for the reader. Mr Jeffery also effectively uses metaphors and analogy to help develop the readers awareness and understanding of the teachings. Of particular benefit is the question and answer session at the end of each chapter; taken from real life presentations the answers Mr Jeffery gives illustrate not only his knowledge and understanding, but also his warmth, care and compassion for others.

Highly recommended. Paul, S. Wales

One of the few books available which provides a clear explanation of the ideas of the Fourth Way. Recommended. Rose, Swansea

It's good to see that this book is back in print. As other reviewers have attested, this is an excellent introduction to the Way as brought to us by G.I. Gurdjieff. The ideas are set forth in a clear, concise and sincere way. The questions and answers sections at the end of some chapters are very enlightening, particularly as some of the questioners challenge the ideas. As is mentioned on the book's back cover blurb, George Jeffery had regular contact with direct students of Mr Gurdjieff, including Rina Hands and their respective groups worked together regularly during the 1980s. There are many books written about the ideas and practices that Gurdjieff brought but, in my opinion, George Jeffery's is an invaluable contribution, which I can't recommend highly enough, for those who are truly seeking. Alan, Brighton

This is the most complete, concise and accessible introduction to the Gurdjieff Work that I have found. Essential reading for anyone new to the Work or wanting to refresh their knowledge.

Sarah, Swansea, UK
