Keenan returns with the action-packed second installment in the Gods of the New World series, Fire in the Ocean, a paranormal fantasy steeped in Ancient Hawaiian lore perfect for fans of Patricia Briggs and C.E. Murphy.
After saving the world once, Sierra's earned a vacation. She's thinking Hawaii: sun, surf, sand. With her boyfriend called away for work, she'll make do with the company of her friends Chaco, also known as Coyotl the trickster, and Fred, a mischievous mannegishi with the power to disappear and reappear at will. When the motley crew is swept overboard during a whale watching trip and encounter a mysterious white octopus, they are plunged into a whole new adventure that will test their magical mettle.
Pulled ashore on the island of Molokai, Sierra finds hospitality and powerful friends. When she is asked to prevent the construction of a potentially disruptive energy plant, she is drawn into a tangle of godly proportions. But the machinations of the gods can be opaque at best--and sometimes downright lethal for mortals.
For Sierra, the sun, surf, and sand are still there, but Hawaii is far more than a day at the beach.

Review Quotes

"A riveting blend of ancient myth and modern intrigue. Supernatural thrills, corporate espionage and great characters make for a thrill-ride read!"--Gail Z. Martin, author of Reign of Ash

"Any fan of mythology and good old fantasy will greatly enjoy this novel. Keenan manages to hook the reader from page one, throwing in some unusual characters (and tropes), mixing it up with a villain that has a brand new bag of toys. I won't spoil - but it is a new take on the whole good vs evil fight. I love the fact that Keenan picked Meso-American mythology - and rocked the world with it. She clearly knows her stuff and has the potential to take on seasoned authors with her mastery of language and modern twists on some of the most awesome fictional gods around. Looking forward to the sequel."--Ryan Attard, author of Firstborn

"Native American mythology is often understated and you can never find enough of it in Fantasy Literature. But don't worry, K.D. Keenan is here to fix that with The Obsidian Mirror.
What makes the author so special? Well, let's just say that her best childhood friend was a Native American skull, which she received when she turned six. Show me a better qualification and I'll eat it! And before you ask, yes, she did return the skull to its proper place when she got old enough to know better.
The story turned out so well and it is so rich in detail that one can almost suspect the author learned more than a few tales from said skull. Add a little bit of Voodoo to the mix and you are well on your way to an all-star American pantheon, echoing Neil Gaiman's American Gods in a most interesting manner.
Oh, and for all that the author won't admit it, The Obsidian Mirror has tons of humor. This is skillfully done, with the jokes lurking in the backdrop, tiptoeing behind the text and seldom breaking the surface of the mirror. More often than not you will recognise the joke the same way scientists recognise dark matter - by its effect on the surroundings rather than by its blatant presence."--Sorin Sociu, author of The Scriptlings

About the Author

K.D. Keenan worked in the high technology industries for 30-plus years as a content creator and public relations expert. She founded her own PR agency, named one of Silicon Valley's Top 25 PR agencies for 10 years running by the Silicon Valley Business Journal. Today, she focuses on her fiction writing, her grandchildren, and a long list of things she'd like to do if there were more hours in the day.
Keenan has always been a voracious reader. Having worked through her grandparents' extensive library of Victorian children's literature, she began reading fantasy and science fiction at the age of nine-a move that curbed her tendency to write with a mid-Nineteenth Century flair that was never really appreciated by her English teachers.
The Obsidian Mirror, the first book in a trilogy, tells the tale of a Silicon Valley PR executive whose life takes a turn for the weird when a fast-talking coyote appears on her doorstep and plunges her into a whirlwind of hijacked technology, ancient evil, and environmental threat. Fire in the Ocean picks up Sierra's story as she embarks on a tropical vacation but instead encounters the ancient magic of the "isle of sorcerers" as she fights to protect the precious natural environment of Hawai'i.
Keenan and her husband of 45 years have two grown children and two grandchildren.
