BATTEN (1925 - 2006) was the Chairman of the Board of the management consulting and human resource development firm, <em>Batten, Batten, Hudson and Swab</em>, Inc., whose headquarters were located in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa. A prolific writer, Batten also published a number of books on management, including <em>Developing a Tough-Minded Climate...for Results</em> (1965); <em>Beyond Management by Objectives</em> (1966); <em>Dare to Live Passionately</em> (1966); <em>Guide to Successful Living</em> (1969); <em>The Confidence Chasm</em> (co-authored with his daughter Gail Batten, 1972); and <em>Expectations and Possibilities</em> (1981). Mr. Batten reached thousands of people with his philosophy of "tough-minded" living and working; a bold and articulate author, his works enriched the lives of many managers.
