Besides all other high qualifications he had a gift of empathy and sympathy so extraordinary that it was said to amount to 'nothing less than a form of genius'. Ordained in 1854, King was chaplain and then Principal of the newly created Theological College at Cuddesdon. He subsequently spent twelve years in Oxford as Regius Professor of Pastoral Theology, and the remainder of his life, from 1885, in Lincoln as the much-loved Bishop. Edward King virtually invented pastoral theology as a serious subject in the Anglican Church. He was concerned to train a clergy who were pastorally, theologically and professionally competent in a way seldom seen before. As a bishop he exercised his ministry among the needy and the vulnerable, through an apostolic witness to the ordinary laity of the diocese. In his teaching, his personal and pastoral ministry and most conspicuously his lengthy episcopate, he embodied and communicated that gospel, life-affirming, tradition which in turn speaks so powerfully to the needs of the world in any age.

Review Quotes

Have you ever been introduced to someone with these words, 'You need to meet this person.' Well, let me assure you: Edward King is someone you need to meet! Beloved by many, feared and hounded by a reactionary few, this nineteenth-century English 'bishop for the poor' both proclaimed and lived out a way of love that cost him dearly. Prolific author Michael Marshall's enticing account of this pastoral leader, whom one agnostic friend described as having 'divine light in his eyes', will inspire you and make you glad that you were introduced to Edward King. THE MOST REV ' D MICHAEL B. CURRY Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church

It is odd that King has not had the comprehensive modern biographical study he so merits, and the present book is a wonderful rectification of that lack. Edward King matters because he helped to restore its soul to the nineteenth-century Church of England, as did so many who were inspired or trained by him for a new kind of ministry among the needy and marginal. The centrality of that vision to any Church worth the name remains the same; we can hope that this fine study will inspire a deeper passion to see it realized for today and tomorrow.
