Book Synopsis

From the wild and woolly mining camps, to the rampages of the Civil War, to the many cowboys riding on the range, those frontier folks often used terms and phrases that are no longer used in everyday language today. Yet other words and sayings were often specific to certain regions and never used across the states. These terms, as in the past, are still sometimes heard in specific areas, but are "foreign" to the rest of us. From the pages of period newspapers, books, and century old dictionaries comes the slang, lingo, and phrases of the American Frontier. Even if you're not looking for a definition, you'll get a peek into the charm and character of a historic era. In addition to the hundreds of words and phrases, readers will also enjoy more than 150 vintage images.

About the Author

Kathy Weiser-Alexander is the Founder and Editor of the website LegendsOfAmerica.com, which focuses heavily on the Old West, travel destinations and American history in general. Her love of history started as a child, after visiting the many ghost towns and learning about the historic characters of the Moreno Valley in Northeastern New Mexico, while spending summers at her grandmothers' cabin near Eagle Nest. In addition to starting the website in 2003, her work has been published in several books, the first of which was "Great American Bars and Saloons" in 2006 by Chartwell Books, followed by major contributions to "Greetings from Route 66" (voyageur Press) in 2010 along with several other noted Route 66 authors. Her work is also published under the "Legends Of America" name with "Old West Lawmen" (2012), and "Lynching's, Hanging's & Vigilante Groups" (2014) through Roundabout Publications. "Frontier Slang, Lingo & Phrases" is her first self publishing adventure directly through Legends Of America. In 2014, Kathy was featured in the cable network Investigation Discovery (ID) channel's "Evil Kin", episode 202 about the Bloody Benders, and both Kathy and her husband/business partner Dave Alexander took part in "Ghost Towns: America's Lost World", an over 5 hour, 2 disc DVD released by Mill Creek Entertainment in April of the same year. In 2015, Kathy appeared on the American Heroes Channel in two episodes of the show "Gunslingers" discussing Bat Masterson, original air date August 2, 2015, and Bill Doolin, original air date August 16, 2015. Kathy and her husband continue to operate Legends Of America from their home on the Lake of the Ozarks, just outside of Warsaw, Missouri.
