From 2001 to 2006, he managed Kroll's security consulting and engineering practice in Seattle, and was responsible for projects throughout Washington, Oregon, California, and Nevada. Silva is an independent security consultant located in the Seattle, Washington area. Michael has over 40 years of security industry experience, including over thirty years as a consultant. Michael started in the security industry at the age of 14, when he began installing burglar alarm systems. Michael has had a life-long interest in electronics, radios, and business. In addition to practicing as a security consultant, Michael frequently mentors people who wish to enter the security consulting profession themselves. Michael's first book, "Becoming an Independent Security Consultant", was written specifically for newcomers to the profession. Michael is board-certified as a Certified Protection Professional (CPP) and is a member of the International Association of Professional Security Consultants (IAPSC) Michael stayed a confirmed bachelor for the first fifty-three years of his life. In 2009, Michael reconnected with Melanie, a girl who he knew from 35 years earlier when they both worked in the same restaurant together. He was fond of her back then, but let her get away. Not wanting to make the same mistake twice, Michael married Melanie and they now live happily with their Boston Terrier, Rosie. Michael is a licensed amateur radio operator with the call sign of K7DSL.
