Gilbert is professor of history at the University of Maryland and taught at Amsterdam University and the University of Paris. He has written numerous books, including <i>Another Chance: America After World War II, The Pursuit of Liberty, </i> and <i>Perfect Cities: Chicago's Utopias in the 1890's, </i> which was a <i>New York Times</i> Notable Book of 1991.
