Going beyond a chronological narrative, the book offers new insights by questioning classic themes of the history of medicine: physicians, institutions and the nation state. While retracing specific Belgian characteristics, it also engages with broader European developments in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Medical histories of Belgium will appeal to Historians of Belgium in various subfields, especially cultural history and political history and medical historians and medical practitioners seeking the historical context of their activities.

From the Back Cover

Medical histories of Belgium offers an overview of the Belgian medical field in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Moving beyond traditional representations of medicine and the state, the book assembles narratives that explore the multifaceted relation between medicine and a variety of themes such as gender, religion, disability, media and colonialism in the Belgian context. The volume consists of nine thematic chapters, structured around three major frames in medical history: the institution, the nation state and the physician. The chapters question these traditional points of reference by offering new narratives on health, care and citizenship. They bring a variety of agents (physicians, women religious, politicians, architects, patients), spaces (hospitals, mutual societies, universities, health exhibitions, scientific conferences) and institutional levels (local, national, international) into medical historiography. Throughout the book, the question of the particularity of the Belgian medical field forms a connecting thread, with each of the chapters linking medical developments to the social and political realities of the country.

About the Author

Joris Vandendriessche is Research Professor in the Cultural History since 1750 Research Group at the University of Leuven Benoît Majerus is Professor of European History at the University of Luxembourg
