Book Synopsis

About nine miles long and two miles wide, Crystal Lake has been a recreational center in northwest Michigan for over 100 years. However, resorts and vacations were not the intention of Benzonia s first settlers, who arrived on Crystal Lake s eastern shore in 1858 to found a religious colony and a college. In an attempt to increase the area s economic potential with a navigable channel to Lake Michigan, Crystal Lake was accidentally lowered in 1873. As the waters drained away, an unexpected boon occurred as summer camps, cottages, and resorts sprang up along its shores. The railroads and steamships were quick to follow with eager entrepreneurs, developers, and tourists. Between Frankfort and Point Betsie to the west, and Beulah to the east, an assortment of hideaways and getaways were established to cater to people of differing religions, occupations, and classes."

Review Quotes

Title: Past to Present
Author: Colin Merry
Publisher: Grand Traverse Insider
Date: 5/26/09

Several local authors have seen their works published recently, one adding a Benzie chapter to a popular series of pictorial histories and the other addressing the matter of salvation.

Crystal Lake, (Arcadia Publishing), is one of the latest entries into the publisher s expansive Images of America series, which tells the histories of communities across the nation with vintage photographs.

According to Louis Yock, author of Crystal Lake and director of the Benzie Area Historical Museum, Arcadia Publishing recruited him to write the book.

The publisher saw me as a good source of local history, he said.

Through photographs and informative descriptions of the images, the book tells the history of local communities growing up around Crystal Lake beginning in 1858, when the Reverend Charles E. The book continues with the accidental lowering of Crystal Lake and the subsequent rise of Beulah as a resort town, along with the stories of various families and organizations who built around it.

Yock said the photos featured in the book all came from the museum s collection.

It was hard to winnow out the photos, they re all unique and particular, he said. I was always finding new stuff.

Yock said he wanted to emphasize the area s history of being a resort destination. He said the area has always been a vacation hot-spot, even through the World Wars and the Great Depression. He also said the history behind the various families and resorts was very interesting.

All of the other industries; logging and shipping, eventually went away, Yock said. But the resort industry has been steady for 100 years.

Another goal Yock had in mind when writing the book was to author something fun that would appeal to both residents and visitors.

The book is what I call history light - you don t have to be a big history buff to enjoy it, he said. It is fun stuff. I put a lot of things in the book people have been asking me since I became the director.

Saving Souls in the 21 st Century answers an entirely different set of questions. Author James Sanderson, pastor at the Beulah Church of Christ, said his self-published book can help Christians answer questions of faith.

This book answers some of the most asked questions about the Bible, he said. It is a workbook Christians can use to help them study.

Sanderson said Christians today seem afraid to study or answer questions about the Bible for fear they do not know enough about it. He also said churches are teaching less scripture straight from the source.

Television s recent interest in plumbing biblical secrets scientifically has raised doubts in the Bible s validity as well, according to Sanderson.

A lot of people watch A&E or the Discovery Channel, he said. These shows put more doubt in peoples minds. In the book, I use archeology to prove things mentioned in the Bible happened exactly the way they are described.

Saving Souls in the 21st Century is essentially a workbook, with a handy index pointing to chapters which help address a particular question such as the validity of the resurrection and the location of biblical sites. Chapters on the old and new covenants, understanding sin and the proper method one becomes a Christian are included in the book as well.

There are a lot of doubts and confusion the way the Bible is being taught now, Sanderson said.
