Starting with the Native Americans who have been documented through archaeology, to be harvesting fish on the river.

English colonial history starts in 1683 when William Nicoll purchase land from the Native Americans. Over a period of 14 years he acquired over 50,000 acres and all of the Connetquot River Vally. His family would own and live in the vicinity of the river for almost 200 years.

It is also a story of recreational hunting and fishing on the river that started possibly before 1811. It is the story of an inn on the river that was run by the Jackson family and latter by the famed Snedecor family. Later in 1866 the inn would be incorporated into the fabled millionaire sportsmen's South Side Sportsmen's Club house. The Club had such notable members as the; Vanderbilts, Belmonts, Cuttings, Whitneys, Carnegie and Tiffany. It also had such notable guests and visitors as; Daniel Webster, Henry Clay, John Cox Stevens, William T. Sherman, Presidents; Martin Van Burn, Ulysses S. Grant, Chester Arthur, Grover Cleveland, Theodore Roosevelt and Herbert Hover.

Not to be forgotten is the story of the splendid wildlife and vegetation that inhabit the river valley on Long Island.

Finally it is the story of a 3,476 acre park that became the first New York State Park Preserve in 1978, and how the people of the surrounding area have banded together to keep intact the heritage of this magnificent river valley.
