Book Synopsis

As human beings, we will inevitably go through a life-changing event at some point in our life. It could be losing a job of 20 years, finalizing a divorce, being forced to retire early because of an injury, or leaving the military. These life-changing events can have disastrous effects on us and the people around us. Some of us never work through these events and end up unhappy and stuck in life. This happened to Nick when he left a 12-year career as a Marine Raider with the Marine Corps Special Operations Unit. For years, he was stuck with feelings of anger, indifference, and bitterness. Until he finally decided to take action and apply the skills he learned as a Raider and got to work on solving his personal problems.

The Excommunicated Warrior takes you through the journey of Nick's transition out of the Special Operations as he attempted to reintegrate into the civilian world. Through this journey, he identified 7 different stages of transition.

Nick quickly realized that these 7 stages were something most veterans had to go through and he launched a non-profit that focused on helping the nation's veterans transition out of the military. Soon, Nick started developing steps to work through the stages, all aimed at the military community. However, through various speaking engagements, it became clear that Nick's ideas about the 7 stages of transition applied to anyone, not just veterans. The stages applied to anyone that had gone through a life-altering event. This book outlines the 7 stages and how you can use them in your life. In short, the book is for anyone who has gone through a life-changing event and refuses to be a victim of circumstance. Anyone who decides to never quit, never surrender, and always move forward.

Review Quotes

5.0 out of 5 starsVery Motivational Book

October 28, 2018

Format: PaperbackVerified Purchase

Man, I read the book in about 4 hours. A lot of good stuff in there. I loved the part where you could put pretty much any service members name here and it's the same story. And the whiteboard section with your girls really hit hard for me. Great book man, I'm gonna pass it around after I read it again. Thanks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book

November 12, 2018

Format: Kindle EditionVerified Purchase

Wish I had this information when I got out of the Marine Corps in 2009. Will definitely refer back to it in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Epic read!

November 12, 2018

Format: Kindle Edition

Nick takes a complex and emotional subject and communicates it so that even those who never served such as myself not only clearly understand but find actionable takeaways to help overcome trauma and massive life disruptions. A must-read for this year along with the other subject-related greats like The Evil Hours by David Morris - Nick is in the same class and worth your time to take a deep dive into this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The honesty

November 8, 2018

Format: Kindle Edition

This is the best book I have read so far that relates too adjusting to the major changes that life will throw in your path. I am struggling with some of these things and I have found it difficult to relate to much. This book really touched home with some of the mountains I must overcome. This book is worth the read even if you haven't been in the military. It will help you or a friend that might need a different perspective on handling some of life's big challenges.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like talking with a friend

November 12, 2018

Format: Kindle Edition

Such good information, delivered in a conversational way, like you're sitting around a fire having a drink with Nick. He's such a solid human being, and it really comes through in this book. I'm buying a few more copies to give to friends who have gone through (non-military) transitions of their own.
