He is the author of several books and his work has appeared in The New York Times, Chicago Tribune, and Sydney Morning Herald. He maintains a website and blog called The Mad Traveler (www.TheMadTravelerOnline.com, Revtravel.com) and is an avid outdoorsman. He has lived abroad in several places including Italy, Guatemala, Turkey, Panama, and Thailand, but currently lives in Madison, Wisconsin. Eric Hansen's first recorded hike was an ascent of New York's Bear Mountain at the age of four. His parents encouraged him to roam the woods with curiosity and confidence, the beginning of a lifelong love of exploration and route finding in the outdoors. Topographic maps were the wallpaper of his childhood bedroom. He has hiked and backpacked extensively and now divides his time between the mountains and canyons of the West and the woods and waters of the Midwest. Eric's background includes successful climbs of most of the high peaks in Montana's Glacier National Park and over a dozen rim-river-rim treks in the Grand Canyon. After twenty years of exploring Wisconsin's natural areas, he hiked 800 miles to research this guidebook. He is a frequent contributor and gear reviewer for Backpacker Magazine. His local outdoor writing credits include Milwaukee Magazine, The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, and Shepherd Express, as well as Silent Sports Magazine.
