About the Book

This book offers a detailed survey of adult congenital heart disease using numerous pictorial examples and explanatory drawings. Difficult and complex examples are supplemented with digital images and video to aid in illustrating and understanding the anatomy.

Book Synopsis

The aims and scope of this atlas include a complete review of the embryology of the normal heart, the normal cardiac anatomy along with a complete discussion of the terms and definitions used to identify and clarify both normal and abnormal anatomy. In addition, techniques of cardiac CT angiography as it pertains to imaging congenital abnormalities are discussed including radiation concepts and radiation saving techniques. The bulk of this book then goes on to completely review the field of adult congenital heart disease using text and more importantly a multitude of pictorial examples (in color and grey scale) to demonstrate the abnormalities. Drawings accompany each picture to better explain the example. Furthermore, difficult and complex anatomical examples are supplemented with digital images and movies to aid in illustrating and understanding the anatomy. Each general set of anomalies as well as each specific abnormality or set of abnormalities includes a concise and simple review of the embryology and epidemiology of the abnormality as well as a concise explanation of the anatomy of the abnormality. In addition, the methods to identify and recognize the abnormality by computed tomography is discussed. Finally, the prognosis and common treatment options for the anomaly are addressed within this comprehensive book.

From the Back Cover

Improvements in surgical and medical management of congenital heart disease (CHD) result in an increased life expectancy and a greater number of children living into adulthood. Consequently, adult cardiologists are caring for increasing numbers of patients with congenital heart defects. In many instances, these patients have undergone palliative but not corrective procedures and may be at higher risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.

In the past several years, the use of CT angiography (CTA) has increased, driven mainly by technical improvements that allow shorter imaging times and high spatial and temporal resolution. Thus, CTA combines widespread availability with the advantages of volumetric data acquisition, short acquisition times, and the possibility of simultaneous evaluation of myocardial and extracardiac structures, ventricular function and coronary anatomy making it a very appealing imaging modality in CHD patients.

CT Atlas of Adult Congenital Heart Disease is an all inclusive, invaluable tool to describe the features of classic CHD, hereditary cardiomyopathies and aortopathies. It includes comprehensive pathology descriptions and discussions of the utility of CTA in the diagnosis of all forms of adult CHD. The many CTA images and illustrations demonstrate the pathologies and provide a framework for recognizing patterns of CHD in adult patients. It also includes pre-procedural pediatric CHD cases to allow better understanding of CHD anatomy and pathophysiology, and thus will be essential reading for all pediatric and adult cardiologists and radiologists involved in the management of these patients.

About the Author

Wojciech Mazur, Professor of Clinical Medicine and Pediatrics, The Christ Hospital Heart and Vascular Center of Greater Cincinnati, OH, USA - Marilyn Siegel, Professor of Radiology and Pediatrics, Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology, St Louis, MO, USA -Tomasz Miszalski-Jamka, Deputy Head of the Center for Diagnosis, Prevention and Telemedicine, John Paul II Hospital, Krakow, Poland - Robert Pelberg, Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine, The Christ Hospital Heart and Vascular Center of Greater Cincinnati, OH, USA.
