Bailey is a mystery writer and a professor of criminal justice in the School of Criminal Justice at the University at Albany. She is a recipient of the George N. Dove award and of a Macavity Award for her nonfiction book, African American Mystery Writers. She also has been nominated for Edgar, Anthony, and Agatha awards for non-fiction. Her mystery fiction features amateur sleuth/crime historian Lizzie Stuart and police detective Hannah McCabe. She is a past Executive VP of Mystery Writers of America and a past president of Sisters in Crime.
