She completed her BA at the University of British Columbia and her PhD at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. She is a Professor Emerita at Long Island University in New York, where she began work in 1985 after several years at the New York State Psychiatric Institute and the faculty of the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University. She's also held visiting scholar appointments the University of Innsbruck, Austria, and the University of North Wales in Bangor, UK. She is currently a visiting scholar at the University of British Columbia, Canada. Although best known for her work on implicit learning, her research interests also include cultural factors in the development of values and attitudes.
