By critically re-engaging with canonical theories of biopolitics from Foucault, Agamben and Esposito, and introducing Nancy, Badiou and Lefort to the discussion, he develops a vision of democratic biopolitics where diverse forms of life can coexist on the basis of their reciprocal recognition as free, equal and in common. He demonstrates how this vision can be realised and sustained by using examples of our lived experience.

From the Back Cover

The first book to develop a broad vision of a democratic revolution in biopolitics Contemporary studies of biopolitics assume that the rise of biopolitical governance entails the eclipse of democracy. The abstract egalitarianism of democratic government appears to be incompatible with the concrete, particularist and individualising operations of biopower. Democratic Biopolitics challenges this interpretation and argues for the possibility of a positive synthesis of biopolitics and democracy. By re-engaging with such canonical theorists of biopolitics as Giorgio Agamben and Roberto Esposito, and introducing new philosophical approaches into the discussion - including Jean-Luc Nancy, Alain Badiou and Claude Lefort - the book develops a vision of democratic biopolitics as the coexistence of diverse forms of life based on their reciprocal recognition as free, equal and in common. Prozorov demonstrates the feasibility of this vision by addressing its correlates in our lived experience and argues for its sustainability by elucidating the pleasure involved in the freeform way of living that democracy makes possible. Sergei Prozorov is Professor of Political Science at the University of Jyväskylä. He is the author of eight previous books, including Agamben and Politics (2014) and Biopolitics of Stalinism (2016). His research interests include political philosophy, theories of democracy and totalitarianism, biopolitics and governance.

About the Author

Sergei Prozorov is Professor of Political Science at the University of Jyväskylä.
