It also features expert advice, hints and tips on how to spot interesting patterns wherever you go, and how you can incorporate them into your quilting.

Review Quotes

Once you have read The Practical Guide to Patchwork: New Basics for the Modern Quiltmaker, 12 Quilt Projects Elizabeth Hartman's first book, you will have all the basics you need to begin quilting and to progress to an intermediate level. Once you feel you are at an intermediate level, than I would strongly encourage you to check out Modern Patchwork: 12 Quilts to Take You Beyond the Basics. The title could not be more accurate for this book, it will take you beyond the basics. One of the most important things about Elizabeth's books (and the key thing that sets her apart from others) is that with each pattern she includes a design for the quilt backing. If you have spent anytime reading beginner quilting books you will see that most often the patterns only include directions from the quilt top, leaving you with no clue what to do on the back. Even now, as an intermediate quilter, I am sometimes stumped on what to do on the backs of my quilts. Also with each pattern, she includes alternate ideas for fabric options, which can really help you step out and make the quilt your own. The 12 Projects in this book all use different techniques so you will learn a ton! I love this book and can't wait to make all of the projects. --Alyssa Lichner; 07/06/12

Create template shapes for your quilts with more confidence. This is a great product if you are a quilter who uses templates. It also is wonderful if you are about to start a "stack-and-whack" quilt or a pattern where it is imperative to have precision alignment. You can easily mark your fabric design repeat on the template sheets and actually see perfectly to align the design. You can get an accurate piece every time. The grid lines are distinguished in easy-to-read ruler increments in eighths. Each package contains four 8.5"x11" sheets in a matte-finish vinyl. It's easy to cut and has a nonslip surface. --Quilter's World, June 2012

Take the fear out of free-motion quilting with this intermediate level guide filled with modern designs inspired by the world around us. Learn to spot interesting patterns everywhere to translate into quilting-pebbles, waves, vines and finials are just a few of the things that inspired the designs in this book. Additionally, quilting diagrams show how to put designs together for the most creative effect. --Quilters, June/July 2012

Working at McCall's Quilting, I get to see lots of new books. I was thirilled with Modern Quilting Designs by Bethany Pease arrived. The pages are full of fresh and playful quilting designs that look as if they're hand-drawn on the pages. The message here is to have fun and enjoy the process without worrying about perfection. No marking needed for these designs...just practice a bit, sketching on paper, and enjoy the fun of "drawing" on your quilt as you stitch. --McCall's Quilting, July/August 2012

"If you're looking to perk up your free-motion machine quilting, or hoping to expand your knowledge of free-motion stitching motifs, look no further than Modern Quilting Designs. Auther Bethany Pease shares a wealth of designs, many of them continuous line, to help you stitch out everything from vines and patterns inspired by nature to more traditional stitch variations featuring feathers. Although this book does not offer page after page of full-color quilts featuring Pease's designs, it does give the playful impression of peering inside a quilt artist's personal sketchbook-which it is, and it is this characteristic that makes it so fresh and fun. All in all, this is an inspiring title for those who revel in the possibilities of free-motion quilting." --MODERN patchwork
