She is the author of biographies of Cleopatra and Gabriele d'Annunzio and of <i>Heroes: A History of Hero Worship</i>. Former television critic for the <i>Evening Standard</i>, she has long been a regular contributor to the books section of <i>The Sunday Times</i> (London).
