In this five volume series, the three children of the Jennette family travel back in time to discover the origin of their ancestors and the events that shaped the civilization of Cape Hatteras Island. Throughout the series, islanders live as they did when only an occasional mail boat kept them connected to the rest of the world---before a bridge linked the island to the mainland, before tourists flocked to the area during the summer season, and before the government became involved in managing the land. Isolated from others, they created a life of comfort and community, one that is long lost. In each subsequent volume, the children meet the people and experience the events that gradually transformed Cape Hatteras Island to the popular resort area it is today.

In Pirates, the children are transported back in time to meet their more colorful ancestors. They begin to take adventures away from the family compound, as mobility is enhanced by the addition of two special horses, Pegasus, Luke' Christmas present, and Blue, for Ellie. Learning of an old mansion in the woods, they are awestruck when Grandpop takes them there. Frequent secret visits form a bond between the children and the mysteries held by the 250 year old stone dwelling. Ellie's power grows, as do the powers given to the boys by the old indian shaman. Luke is introduced to Blackbeard and his cronies, and uncovers a family secret! Community events bring the villages together to celebrate their collective history of Pirates, as the island begins to stir with the looming threat of WWII.

Review Quotes

1. Oh my, I was disappointed that the pirates were not Burt Lanchaster, or Johnny Depp

2. I searched your list of pirate names hoping to find someone related to me. What an interesting time. I had no idea they came so close to this island.

3. My children were fascinated and ran around the house like pirates for weeks afterwards. I had to rent Treasure Island, but we all enjoyed it. I even cooked popcorn and made brownies to duplicate the experience of the party the Coast Guard gave to the kids. It made me proud to have served down there.

4. O.K. I'm hooked, but I don't think you are gonna beat this one. I was worried that there would be evil spirits but I was pleasantly surprised about the spirit of the Island.

5. I learn things from these books, now I know how to make a canoe. I am also now teaching my children how to recognize the star clusters. We are looking at the stars when we see them, but there is mostly too much light from the earth to see it all.

6. Sailing ships have always been my hobby, it was good to have them all described. What are you going to do to top this one? I will also pay more attention to Charleston. Our coast is fabulous.

7. Thank you for providing Christmas presents this year. My family does not find me a boring grandmother any more.

8. Where exactly is the mansion in the woods. We visit Hatteras every year, and this is something I am going to find. Does it still stand? I watch the people who restore those places in Pennsylvania, and I know they last a long time. Are there tours?
