It is the story of a funny little bird who is ashamed of his bright blue feet until he realizes that being different is what makes us all the same. The story of Solly McBoo is set amongst the colorful and diverse aviary population of the Galapagos Islands where diversity is celebrated and commonplace. Young people will relate to Solly because they themselves are just beginning to understand that we are all different. Psychologists theorize our attitudes about race develop over a long period of time. Similarly, once we have developed an attitude or an opinion, it takes a long time to change it. Thus, if we are to succeed in combating our ugly social biases, we will make our greatest strides if we work to shape positive and accepting attitudes in our children. If we afford young people the opportunity to accept and appreciate differences early in life, their feelings towards others will not be easily changed.
