Horan, OFM, author, All God's Creatures: A Theology of Creationand The Last Words of Jesus: A Meditation on Love and Suffering
In this comprehensive study of St. Bonaventure's theology of Christ crucified, Sr. Ilia Delio explores the breadth and depth of mediaeval philosophy and theology and she does so in a way that makes it relevant to the twenty-first century. "In a fragmented, suffering, and power-dominated world, Bonaventure offers a vision that is not only breathtaking in its comprehensiveness but metaphysically grounded in divine goodness and contingent on personal intimacy and relationship. It is a worldview that is critically needed in our time," writes Delio.

Review Quotes

Praise for Ilia Delio
"Ilia Delio's work on the insights of Franciscan Masters such as Bonaventure, Clare, and John Duns Scotus, continues to deepen our appreciation for the contemporary relevance of this important spiritual and theological tradition. Hers is a scholarly vision that unites reason with faith, science with religion, Christianity with other faith traditions, and spirituality with secular concerns." --Mary Beth Ingham, CSJ
"Ilia Delio's Crucified Love has become a modern classic in the study of Bonaventure's Christology and theology of the Cross. This reissuing of the volume helps make the 'Seraphic Doctor, ' St. Bonaventure, more accessible to a wider audience. Through this book they will discover the profound and inspiring theology that reminds us that Christ is at the center of creation and that the Franciscan intellectual tradition remains as timely as ever!" -- Daniel P. Horan, OFM, author, All God's Creatures: A Theology of Creationand The Last Words of Jesus: A Meditation on Love and Suffering
"For St. Bonaventure the burning love of the Crucified Christ is the way to mystical union with Christ whom he calls our "spouse." Union with Christ on the cross is a mystical marriage that Ilia Delio brilliantly explores and illumines in Crucified Love. It is a book that is itself a journey into God through the portal of love that flows from the mystery of Christ's love for us in and through the overflowing love of the three Persons of the Blessed Trinity. An attentive and prayerful reading of this book invites us to our own journey into how we can return Christ's burning love for us." --Murray Bodo, OFM, author, Francis: The Journey and the Dreamand Surrounded by Love: Seven Teachings from Saint Francis

About the Author

Ilia Delio, OSF, a Franciscan Sister of Washington, DC, holds the Josephine C.
