He received his undergraduate degree from the University of East Anglia, his graduate degrees from the University of Cambridge, and the venia legendi from the Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg. He has held fellowships from the British Academy and the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung.<p>
