Cate packs up everything she owns and leaves Calgary on an odyssey westward, to Vancouver Island, where her ever-present journal and the abundance of nature become the foundation of her self-recovery. She yearns for something deeper and then, when she isn't looking, she finds love with the solid and virtuous Ethan. Cate thinks his stead-fast love is what she is searching for, but soon realizes she needs to do her own work, that love for herself is the key.

Cate gets thrown off-course when Lyme Disease, an earthquake in Nepal, her daughter's mental health challenges, and her move with Ethan to the Middle East, cause her to lose her new-found awareness. Her heart calls her to endure the lows and enjoy the highs, to let go of the ties that bind and the fear that controls.
With echoes of Eat, Pray Love, The Healing is a raw and vulnerable exploration of human resilience. At times both
painful and uplifting, it's a story about love, examining motherhood, partnership, grief, expectation and optimism, and the journey inward to self-love.

Review Quotes

"One woman's powerful journey of transformation: A lesson to us all to set anchor, to rise again and again, and to not be swallowed into the belly of profound trauma".

Anne Pybus MSc. Registered Psychologist, British Columbia College of Psychologists

"The Healing is a beautiful and powerful story of one woman's path through heartbreak, the balancing of impossible burdens and the reclaiming of resiliency and Self. Lynda Faye Schmidt has captured the very essence of what it means to truly know, deep inside, the power of love and tells it from the perspective of an Emotional Being living a very human life."

Carol Kujala, Yoga Teacher & Retired Social Worker

"I found The Healing extremely moving, at times to tears, at other times to laughter, and to admiration for living and documenting the journey toward healing. I love Schmidt's marvelous character development. I think she did an amazing job crafting the story of how people can grow beyond their past to create the reality they need and want."

"Like other good books or films where one is engaged with the characters, at the end, The Healing makes one feel you don't want to let them go and definitely want to know more. As the story unfolds, it confirmed for me that maybe there are no 'normal' families - we all have struggles to work through. But the beauty of this book is that it also confirms that resilience is there if, like the main character, Cate, you are prepared to do work. And yes, at times it was extremely rough going. In her story telling, Lynda empowers others to not deny or hide the troubles and challenges but to face the downs. She encourages others to enjoy and fully live the ups and teaches others to embrace everything in between, as Cate does, while working through her and her family's trauma and drama. The author's literary descriptions of and appreciation for things we so often take for granted, like the smells and sounds of the ocean and the sense of place, and the joy that Cate finds in her extensive travel experiences, bring a gentleness and hopefulness to her journey towards healing."

AM Horne, Family Therapist

"The Healing is a powerful story that captures the true essence of courage and personal transformation. The reader accompanies Cate (our protagonist) as she faces her greatest fears, takes a deep breath and dives into the unknown, where the gifts that life offers us are waiting to be claimed."

Lynn Lambert, M.S.W, R.C.S.W.

"Raw and real, The Healing reminds us of how resilient we can be if we just connect and trust in the journey. Cate's heartfelt journals give perspective and inspiration on how to navigate the ups and downs of life."

Julia Crouch, Founder of MatressenceYoga.com, Integrative Nutritional Counsellor
