But farmer Pettson and his quirky cat Findus agree that foxes shouldn't be killed. They should be tricked. They come up with a fabulous plan which makes for an explosive, unforgettable night.

Farmer Pettson lives on a farm with his cat Findus. One day, their neighbour Gustavsson arrived with his dog and a shotgun. His face was grim. "Hello Pettson," he said. "Have you had a visit from the fox?"

"No, not that I've noticed," said Pettson.

"I think you'd have noticed if you had," Gustavsson growled. "He stole one of my hens last night but he won't be doing it again. Next time I see him, I'll shoot him. He might come here tonight, when he finds my hens are locked away." And off he went.

"Findus, that means we should lock our hens up now!" muttered Pettson.

"Foxes shouldn't be shot," said Findus. "They should be tricked."

Pettson chuckled. "I agree, Findus. It's a shame to shoot foxes. We'll work out how to frighten it off, so it won't want to eat a hen ever again."

(Ages 5-8)

Review Quotes

"A captivating, compassionate tale, with illustrations of comic genius."
--Penelope Todd, popular author of Watermark and other fiction for young adults

"I liked Findus and the Fox a lot. My favorite part was when everything was colorful and when Gustavsson was scared from Findus pretending to be a ghost Ooooooo! And everything went BANG, BING, KAPOW! I liked the bit when Pettson made a fake chicken out of a pepper balloon and glued feathers on it. All of the Findus and Pettson books are really good."
--Remy, age seven

"I love the Findus books. I came across them when I was in Sweden a couple of years ago, and I think they're enormously inventive, funny and charming. My grandchildren love them, too."
--Philip Pullman, author of "His Dark Materials" trilogy, including The Golden Compass

"They have been in our book corner for one day and already I can see they will have an incredibly long shelf life--each one has been devoured several times already and the class were unanimous in their choice for story time at the end of the day. These books are irresistible for both adults and children--I can't recommend them highly enough."
--The Book Corner
