From preparing for the arrival of the student teacher through the writing of the letter of recommendation, the cooperating teacher learns how to create an environment that will maximize the growth of the student teacher. The opening vignettes and case studies allow the reader to experience and apply a broad range of useful, practical strategies. This book includes a solid body of research yet reads in a conversational tone. It should be the companion for every cooperating teacher, teacher educator, supervisor, and principal.

Review Quotes

Supervising Student Teachers is an excellent resource for preparing supervisors of student teachers -- whether it is the classroom supervising teacher or the collegiate supervisor. I have used [previous editions of this] textbook for a graduate clinical supervision course and have found that the text is equally beneficial to on-campus and distance learning students. The text leads future supervisors through the many phases of working with a student teacher, and the case studies provide pragmatic scenarios that allow students to think through challenging situations they may encounter in the classroom setting. Supervising Student Teachers is a comprehensive textbook that contains practical information and realistic situations.--Bonnie J. White, distinguished professor of education, Auburn University, Alabama

I am very pleased to learn about the seventh edition of Supervising Student Teachers. I have happily used this book in its several editions for years. Not only does Supervising Student Teachers provide a very practical approach to supervising student teachers, it is also extremely comprehensive in addressing the challenges facing today's student teachers, their cooperating teachers, and their university supervisors. One of my favorite illustrations is the chart showing student teachers' emotional stages. Not only does that chart help the student teacher understand her emotional ups and downs as she progresses through this great 'synthesis experience, ' it also helps the cooperating teacher and university supervisor to provide the support that is needed in this most critical aspect of preparing a new teacher.--Dwayne Olsen, professor emeritus of Teacher Education, University of Wisconsin, Parkside

The thing that I thought was awesome about this book was that when the cooperating teachers and I were having our conferences about the student teachers and their lessons, the cooperating teachers would often reply, 'I just read about this in my textbook.' I loved the professional dialogue it created between us. We even used some of the suggested ideas and charts from the book to share common ideas with the student teachers. This makes a great collaborative tool between cooperating teacher and university supervisor! It created an innovative and professional give and take between cooperating teacher, student teacher, and supervisor.--Donna Brouillette, university supervisor for student teachers, Illinois State University

I highly endorse Supervising Student Teachers. I use it for a graduate level instructional supervision course for classroom teachers, and they find it very useful, practical, and extremely beneficial.--Ed Pultorak, coordinator, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale; former president, Association of Teacher Educators (2004-2005)

Supervising Student Teachers is a must-have for field directors. The insight into field experiences allows a field director to develop a highly effective training program that gives student teachers a safe environment for gathering much needed information and support in developing professional skills while promoting success in their teaching careers. University supervisors and cooperating teachers benefit from the step-by-step observation analysis and instructions for supervision with worksheets, which is an added bonus.--Tammie Brown, interim director of the Office of Professional Laboratory Experiences, Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro

While taking an online university course for supervising teachers, I had the privilege of utilizing the text Supervising Student Teachers. The title is a fitting one, as the text is professional yet practical and covers every imaginable circumstance from both the supervising and student teachers' roles. The case studies were especially beneficial as they created an opportunity to see the teaching profession from all viewpoints, making them relevant and applicable. The perspective that a joint effort from both the student and supervising teacher, in order to experience growth and development, is imperative and was present throughout the readings. The end goal is effective teaching and learning for all. This text is a key component to the success and accountability of both the student and supervising teacher. On a scale of one to ten, with ten being the highest, I rate Supervising Student Teachers an eleven, as it is a practical and outstanding reference for beginning to veteran teachers.--Crystal Thompson, cooperating sixth-grade middle school teacher

About the Author

Marvin A.
