He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and is the author of many books, among them <i>The Victorian Temper</i>, <i>Tennyson: The Growth of a Poet</i>, <i>The Triumph of Time</i>, and <i>The Turning Key: Autobiography and the Subjective Impulse</i>. He is the editor of the Riverside Edition of <i>The Poems of Tennyson</i> and Harvard's <i>The Worlds of Victorian Fiction</i>, among other texts. He died January, 2003.
